Football Defending & Pressing Drills
Good defending is trained, not hoped for. These drills build the individual and collective habits of winning the ball back — the body shape and patience of 1v1 defending, the shared cues behind a coordinated press, and the reaction to counter-press the instant possession is lost.
1v1 Defending Drill
Build the full 1v1 defending sequence: closing the gap while the ball travels, arriving under control, jockeying side-on to steer the attacker, and timing the tackle off a heavy touch.
View drill →Pressing Triggers Drill
Train the whole out-of-possession unit to recognise shared pressing cues and convert them into a coordinated six-second hunt, while staying compact and patient between triggers.
View drill →Gegenpressing Transition Drill
Condition an instant collective reaction to losing the ball, teach the three nearest players to smother the new ball carrier within five seconds, and organise everyone else into lane-cutting rest defence.
